Today we will be discussing:
1 John 1:9
What sins are you refusing to repent of? We all have had those secret sins. The sins that we commit in our mind or have hidden in the dark yet don’t expose to the light. The ones committed by your eyes, in your mind, or when no one is looking. How wonderful we can appear to others when eyes are on us, however what are we like in secret? We don’t like to talk about that do we? We like to just hide the dung under the rug, spray it with perfume, and ignore that it is there. We assume no one knows yet the rug is not flat, and the perfume is running out. Sooner or later you will have to expose it and it will need to be removed.
Nothing is Hidden from God
God sees all that you do even if others don’t. He knows all the sin you will ever do, even though others don’t. Will you repent or wait for God to expose you? What is it that you are hiding? Are your eyes wandering to internet porn? Does your mind lead you to lust or even to hate? Do you kiss your spouse goodnight and then turn to the internet and prostitute the Holy Spirit in you to porn? Do you speak well in front of someone but secretly despise them in your thoughts? Maybe your sins are done physically yet in private. Maybe you’re stealing from friends, work, or family. Are you skimming time off the work clock, or half-heartedly working? All good examples and the list could go on. The point is, God sees and are you going to repent or be exposed?
God Disciplines Those He Loves
Does our sin sit idle, or does it stir about in us? Let’s look at:
This Psalm shows us the anguish of being silent about our sin. Confession and repentance, these two things go together so well. God is waiting for you to forsake your hidden sin and receive forgiveness. If you continue to hold on to that sin it will be exposed into the light. God disciplines those He loves. He doesn’t want His own children to go astray. If you refuse and fight against the Spirit you are turning your back on God. That is exactly what you are doing; you are turning your back on God and are embracing the very nails that crucified Christ. Your sin has a price. When you refuse to repent you are trampling upon the very blood that redeemed you. You spit on Christ’s perfect sacrifice by refusing to turn from your sin and embracing Him. There is no forgiveness for the unrepentant. Let that soak into the very depths of the hidden caverns where you hide your sin. That cavern is the very place that you refuse to let the blood of Christ enter. If left un-confessed, that cavern will be exposed on the Day of Judgment.
Repentance and Grace
Let’s now turn to:
1 John 1:9
If you have repented and confessed to the Lord your sins are absolved! This is done by grace and not of yourselves. The atonement for your sin, won by Christ, was for all time and it remains. No amount of sin can cause you to lose your salvation; only those who reject God(un-repentant sinners) have no assurance of salvation. However, if you have forsaken your sin and have placed your trust and faith in Jesus Christ, you are saved! There is something I should tell you, you will still sin. Make no mistake about it you will sin daily, however it’s the battle against it that shows you are spiritually alive. With that said, stay in the Word of God, let the Spirit wash you with the Word daily. Put on the full armor of God and stand firm on the foundation of Christ. Go in peace, your sins are forgiven.
